Physical Development

Within the EYFS, physical development is focused on developing children's fine and gross motor skills.

Fine Motor Skills:

These focus on using small muscle groups, particularly in the hands and fingers, to develop control and dexterity. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination, which is later linked to early literacy. Children will have access to fine motor activities everyday within the classroom provison.

Activities that promote fine motor skills include: Using playdough, threading beads, lacing, writing, cutting, use of small tools in craft activites and self-care tasks like doing up zips and buttons.

Activities: Running, jumping, climbing, riding bikes and scooters, throwing and catching balls.

Gross Motor Skills:

These involve large muscle movements and aim to develop children's strength, balance, coordination, and agility. Children will take part in P.E lessons twice a week, allowing them to develop different skills and ways of moving their bodies. Additionally children will have access to the outdoor area where there are opportunities for them to develop their gross motor skills through our climbing frame and moving larger resources (construction, tyres, wheel barrows) around the area.

Activities that promote gross motor skills include: Running, jumping, climbing, riding bikes and scooters, throwing and catching balls.
