Welcome to Oak Class!
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 1 but they will continue to learn through play, whilst being involved in exciting topics so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One.
We are really enjoying our new topic all about Superheroes. We had great fun over the first few weeks with our text 'Supertato'. Evil peas invaded our classrooms and tried to mash carrots, boil broccoli and steal our snack! Oh no! Luckily the Year 1 children had a clever idea and insisted on creating super vegetables to combat the evil peas.
In English, we have been learning to write our own superhero stories. We composed simple sentences using full stops and capital letters.
In History, we looked at real life heroes and heroines from the past. We learned about the life of Florence Nightingale and wrote some interesting facts. After the lesson, we made our very own lamps!
In Art, we have worked hard to create our own portraits. Last week, we looked at the work of the famous artist Giuseppe Archimboldo. We used different vegetables to recreate his style of work. The children were eager to show their fabulous masterpieces at the Harvest Festival.
In Geography, we have looked closely at our local area. Then we worked in small groups to create our own 'messy maps' of the school.
In Science, we have looked closely at the human body and the five senses. Logan made his own Mr Potato Head and labelled each sense correctly.
In our Active Maths lessons, we have been learning to identify one more and one less than a given number.
